Hofstra Gets Back On Track With Win Over LIU

Hempstead, NY - Eliot Goldthorp scored two goals and Oliver Svalander added one as Hofstra defeated LIU, 3-2, Wednesday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The win snapped a short two-game losing streak for the Pride.

Hofstra, which is receiving votes in the latest United Soccer Coaches Poll, improved to 2-2 on the season. The Sharks slipped to 2-2 with their second consecutive loss.

Goldthorp put the Pride on the board at the 14 minute mark of the first half when he headed in a cross from Ryan Carmichael for a 1-0 lead. The Sharks would tie the score just minutes before halftime as Andre Puente headed in a Robert Winkler cross with 2:18 seconds to go before intermission.

The Pride would come out of halftime with a more aggressive tact, putting up 13 shots in the final 45 minutes. One of those shots came from Svalander, who netted his first Hofstra goal as the Binghamton transfer right-footed a beautiful pass from Jason Ramirez to put the Pride on top for good at 66:35. Goldthorp would get his first multi-goal game in a Hofstra uniform as the Old Dominion transfer took a pass from Roc Carles and dribbled across the top of the box before launching a shot into the upper right corner just three minutes after Svalander's goal.

The Sharks made it interesting as Puente scored his second of the game as he took a long pass from Joe Cerrato and sent a shot to the right of Hofstra keeper Wessel Speel with 1:46 remaining in the game. The Pride defense clamped down in the final minute and came away with the one-goal victory.

The Pride returns to action Saturday night (7 p.m.) at Monmouth in a Colonial Athletic Association contest.
