Conshohocken, PA – Despite a furious fourth quarter rally, the Hofstra field hockey team dropped a 3-2 decision to Villanova Friday afternoon from the Villanova Field Hockey Field.
Tara McNally and
Teresa Karoff scored the goals for the Pride in the fourth quarter to narrow a 3-0 lead for the hosts. McNally bagged her second tally of the season off a well hit shot from the top of the shooting arc off a penalty corner two minutes into the quarter, and Karoff's goal came with 4:24 remaining on the clock after she collected the rebound off a saved
Cami Larsson shot and lifted the ball over the outstretched goalkeeper.
Villanova (3-0) took an early lead over Hofstra (1-2) at the 6:36 mark of the first quarter when Amanda Middleman finished off a close-range shot. The Wildcats would add to their lead in the second quarter with a penalty corner goal to MaKenna Maguire at 13:16, and they would score again four minutes later on a counter-attack goal from Maggie Mick.
Despite many chances in the final minute of play, the Pride couldn't find the back of the net as the Wildcats held on the for narrow victory.
Merlijn van der Vegt recorded three saves in the first half, while
Pieke Roos played the entire second half and made four stops in her first collegiate action. Karoff finished with three points off her goal and an assist, while
Karissa Hough tallied two assists on the day.
Claire Borman earned the win for Villanova with two saves in the first half, while Emma Leppert also saw action for the hosts and made nine saves in the second half. Mick and Middleman finished with a goal and an assist each for three points for the Wildcats.
Hofstra is back home on Sunday, September 4, at 1 p.m. against Yale. The game will be available to stream live on FloLive.
NOTES:
-This was the first meeting between Hofstra and Villanova since 2006. Hofstra's record against Villanova is now 3-5-1.
-Hofstra totaled 16 penalty corners to Villanova's five. The Pride earned 12 corners in the fourth quarter without allowing any for the Wildcats.
-Hofstra outshot Villanova, 21-15, including a 13-1 advantage in the fourth quarter.
