Hofstra Takes Weekend Series From Stony Brook

Stony Brook, NY - Junior Yagmur Cinel was incredible, posting career-highs of 17 kills and 19 digs, to lead the Hofstra volleyball team to a four-set win over Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium. Freshman Izadora Stedile was outstanding as well as she added 13 kills and season-highs of 20 digs and five service aces.

Hofstra is now 12-1 all-time against Stony Brook. The Pride has won 11 straight matches in the series. Head Coach Emily Mansur is an impressive 10-0 against the Seawolves. Hofstra also won Saturday's match in four sets.

The win ups Hofstra's record to 5-8 overall and 2-0 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Stony Brook slips to 4-6 and 0-2 in CAA action. The 2-0 league start for the Pride is their first since 2015. Set scores were 20-25, 25-19, 25-17, and 25-17 in favor of Hofstra.

Similar to Saturday's match, the Pride dropped the opening stanza but a late run in the set might have ignited Hofstra's run in the next three sets.

After knotting the match with a six-point win in the second set, the Pride were never seriously challenged in the third and fourth set as they dispatched of their Long Island neighbors in four sets for the second consecutive day. After hitting just .026 in the first set, Hofstra regrouped and hit over .200 in the next three sets, including at a .348 clip in the second stanza.

Senior Sarah Pierre posted a match-high seven blocks and added nine kills for the Pride, while senior Zyare Abdul-Rahim tallied nine kills and two blocks. Sophomore Beatriz Alves was strong all-around once again with 44 assists, 15 digs, three kills, three blocks, and two service aces.

Abby Campbell and Leoni Kunz each posted 12 kills for Stony Brook with Kunz adding eight digs and five blocks.

Hofstra is back at home next weekend when it hosts CAA-newcomer North Carolina A&T to the Mack Physical Education Center on Saturday and Sunday for a pair of 1 p.m. matches. Both matches will air on FloVolleyball.
