Izadora Stedile had a season-best 17 kills and added nine digs and three blocks to lead the Hofstra volleyball team to a four-set win over Stony Brook on Saturday afternoon at Pritchard Gymnasium.
Sophomore
Chiara Cucco was outstanding defensively for the Pride with a season-high 27 digs, while junior
Yagmur Cinel had 12 kills, a .393 attack percentage, along with nine digs. Sophomore
Beatriz Alves tallied 49 assists, nine digs, four kills, and three blocks for the Pride.
The match marked the first between the two Long Island schools as Colonial Athletic Association rivals.
Hofstra improved to 4-8 overall and 1-0 in conference play with the win, while Stony Brook dropped to 4-5 and 0-1 in the league. Set scores were 23-25, 25-22, 25-20, and 25-20.
The Pride dug themselves an early hole, dropping a tight first set despite hitting .300 in the stanza. Hofstra quickly responded, though, and the offensive was dynamic in the next two sets - hitting .395 in set two and .344 in the third set - to lead the match two sets to one. Hofstra would flip the script in the final set, holding the Seawolves to a .000 attack percentage in pulling away for the win.
Senior
Zyare Abdul-Rahim added 13 kills for Hofstra, which also got five blocks (and three kills) from senior
Sarah Pierre and four blocks (and five kills) from freshman
Emilly Nunes.
Kali Moore led Stony Brook with 17 kills and added 14 digs, while Torri Henry had 37 assists and 17 digs for the Seawolves.
The teams will meet again on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Stony Brook. The match will air on FloVolleyball.
NOTES
- Hofstra is now an impressive 11-1 all-time against Stony Brook. The Pride has won nine straight matches in the series.
- Stedile's previous season-high in kills was 11 against Miami (FL) on August 26.
- Cucco's previous season-high in digs was 23 vs. St. Francis Brooklyn on September 7. Her career-high is 35 against Elon on November 19, 2021.
- Alves tallied a season-high in assists in the match, besting the 39 she has done twice this year. Her career-high is 55 against Central Connecticut State on August 27, 2021.
