Hofstra Downs Northeastern Behind Strong Defensive Effort

Hempstead, NY - Eliot Goldthorp had a goal and an assist and Ryan Carmichael added a goal as Hofstra picked up a 2-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory Saturday night before a capacity crowd of 1,600 at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The win was Hofstra's third in a row and was the results of a strong defensive effort that allowed just one shot on goal.

The Pride improved to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the CAA with the victory. Northeastern slipped to 2-2-3 overall and 1-1-1 in league play with the loss.

Carmichael put Hofstra on the board just under 10 minutes into the game as he took a long cross from Oliver Svalander and sent a right-footed shot over the shoulder of Northeastern keeper Colby Hegarty. Goldthorp also picked up an assist on the play as his pass sent Svalander streaking down the sideline.

Goldthorp would add a goal to his night when he converted a penalty kick in the 58th minute. Carmichael drew the call when he was taken down by a Northeastern defender in the 18-yard box. That made the score 2-0 in favor of the Pride and was a necessary score as just about 12 minutes later the Huskies were awarded a penalty kick and Ole Kjorholt was able to convert to cut the Pride deficit in half. But the Hofstra defense clamped down even more and did not allow a scoring chance the rest of the way.

Hofstra will return to action Tuesday night at Binghamton. Game time is 7 p.m.
