Hofstra Tripped Up By Rhode Island

Hempstead, NY - Rhode Island scored goals in each half and goalkeeper Max Hinke made three saves as the Rams shut out 17th-ranked Hofstra Monday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The Pride held an 11-6 advantage in shots and an 11-1 edge in corners in the contest.

The Pride slipped to 1-1 on the season while the Rams improved to 1-0-1. The loss was Hofstra's first at home in a span of 21 games dating back to the 2019 season. The Pride is now 17-1-3 at home in that time.

Rhode Island opened the scoring at 22:37 of the first half when Patrick Gryczewski sent a pass to Kevin Castaneda on the left side of the box and his sharp angle shot got past Hofstra keeper Wessel Speel inside the far post. The Rams would add the insurance goal 1:26 into the second half when Isak Oystese picked up a loose ball following confusion on a free kick at midfield and raced in one-on-one with Speel before sliding a right-footed shot into the far corner.

Hinke made three saves to notch his first shutout of his career. Speel had one save for the Pride.

Hofstra will return to action Saturday when it opens Colonial Athletic Association play at Stony Brook at 2 p.m.
