Pride Falls to Wagner in Shootout

Staten Island, NY – Despite a tying goal late in the fourth quarter by Tara McNally, as well as excellent play in goal from Merlijn van der Vegt, the Hofstra field hockey team suffered a 2-1 shootout defeat on the road to Wagner from the Wagner Field Hockey Complex.

The Pride sees its record move to 1-1 following its opening set of games, and Wagner opens its season at 1-0.

Trailing 1-0 late in the fourth quarter, McNally scored her first collegiate goal to even the score with 7:09 remaining on the clock. Lieke Gorsse took the ball off a reset and fed an open McNally inside the shooting arc. The sophomore took a shot on goal that deflected off a Wagner player before resting in the back of the net for the equalizer.

The Seahawks took a 1-0 lead off a penalty corner situation at 3:46 of the second quarter. Natalie Rocuskie inserted the ball to Laura van Hamburg, and she took a shot on goal that was redirected past van der Vegt and into the goal by Kira Mordvinov to give the hosts the lead late in the quarter.

Following a pair of scoreless overtime periods, with both goalies combining for three saves, the game went into a shootout period. Gorsse converted the first opportunity for the Pride, and Wagner's Julia Cruces Pastorino evened the shootout at 1-1. The Seahawks took a 2-1 advantage when Lisolette Koop scored on her attempt and Cami Larsson had her shot saved, but the Pride tied the score when McNally beat Wagner goalkeeper Daisy Ruhle and ven der Vegt denied Agustina DeHarbe. Fede Schroder had her chance stopped by Ruhle, and van der Vegt just missed on stopping van Hamburg. With an opportunity to extend the shootout another round, Adrianna Losiak had a pair of shots denied by Ruhle.

van der Vegt finished the game with nine saves on 10 shots on goal faced. Gorsse led the Pride with four total shots, and she, Larsson, and Simryn Desai all had two shots on goal.

For Wagner, Ruhle stopped eight shots on target to pick up the win in net. DeHarbe led the Seahawks withfive shots, all on goal.
