Hofstra Dominates in Season Opener Over Stonehill

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra field hockey team opened the 2022 schedule in style with a dominating 7-0 win at home over Stonehill on a sunny Saturday afternoon from Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.

The seven Hofstra goals were the most in a single game since the Pride won 7-1 over LIU Brooklyn on October 14, 2018, and it was Hofstra's largest margin of victory since a 7-0 win over Colgate on August 28, 2016.

Adrianna Losiak was one of three first-year goal-scorers for the Pride against the Skyhawks, scoring twice in her collegiate debut. Teresa Karoff assisted twice and scored once, and Logan Oswald scored once in the fourth quarter.

After a scoreless first quarter, Hofstra scored its first goal of the new season when Karoff maneuvered through the Stonehill defense and crossed across the crease to an unmarked Samantha Spera, who stuck out her stick and tallied the first goal of her career at 6:49 of the second period.

The floodgates opened for the Pride in the third quarter, scoring four of its seven goals in the frame to put themselves well ahead of the visiting Skyhawks. Losiak struck twice in the third quarter, first off a rebound from her own shot at 12:32, and again off a deflected shot from Fede Schroder at 9:39. Karoff and Lieke Gorsse added to the four-goal third period with scores of their own, putting the Pride ahead 5-0. Karfoof used excellent stick-work to weave through the Skyhawk backline before finishing in the top corner of the far post at 2:32, and Gorsse scored on an open net after Karoff forced the Stonehill goalkeeper off her line before the Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention selection scored with 49 seconds remaining in the quarter.

Oswald's tally came four minutes into the fourth quarter on one of Hofstra's 10 penalty corners, tapping in a saved shot from Cami Larsson at 10:25. Larsson, a Preseason All-CAA honoree, got herself onto the scoresheet at 6:39 of the frame on a one-timer from Gorsse.

Shannon Conte made 14 saves for the Skyhawks in all 60 minutes, and Andrea Caradonna had the lone shot on goal for Stonehill in the fourth quarter.

Hofstra hits the road on Monday, August 29, for a non-conference match-up against Wagner at 3 p.m.
