Goldthorp's Last Second Goal Gives No. 17 Hofstra A 2-1 Win In Season Opener

Hempstead, NY - Eliot Goldthorp scored the game-winning goal with one second remaining in the game as No. 17 Hofstra won its season opener, 2-1, over Fordham Thursday night at Hofstra Soccer Stadium. The Pride moved to 1-0 on the season while Fordham dropped to 0-1.

The teams played a scoreless first half which saw the Rams outshoot the Pride, 5-2. Hofstra keeper Wessel Speel had two clutch saves to keep the visitors off the board in the opening stanza.

The Pride would strike first as Mason Tatafu scored off a header on a corner kick driven into the box by Stefan Mason at the 62:06 mark. Hofstra would hold the 1-0 lead until the 83:59 mark when Fordham's Ben Shepherd sent a shot into the upper left corner from a pass by Sebastian Fabrin to knot the score.

The game seemed destined for a draw before the Pride got one last push in the final 10 seconds. Nico Oberrauch carried the ball upfield and sent a pass to Ryan Carmichael in the box. The junior forward settled it with one touch and sent a short pass to a streaking Goldthorp, who buried the ball in the net for the game-winner in his Hofstra debut after transferring from Old Dominion.

Speel finished with three saves in the win, while Fordham keeper Demetri Skoumbakis had three saves as well.

Hofstra returns to action Monday night when it hosts Rhode Island at 7 p.m.
