Hempstead, NY -
Brad Camarda pitched a complete game shutout in game two as Hofstra posted a 5-0 victory to earn a doubleheader split with Northeastern Sunday afternoon at University Field. The Huskies won game one, 6-2.
Hofstra moved to 22-21 overall and 12-9 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the split. Northeastern is 25-22-1 overall and 9-9 in CAA play.
Camarda (6-1) allowed five hits and two walks in his first career complete game shutout. The senior right=hander struck out six batters in a 112-pitch performance.
The Pride offense was helped out by three Northeastern errors which resulted in all five runs being unearned. In the fifth,
Nick Marrero led off with a single and on
Zack Bailey's sacrifice bunt attempt, the ball was thrown away to allow Bailey to reach safely and Marrero to go to third. Two batters later,
Michael Florides lifted a sacrifice fly to center that brought in Marrero with the first run of the game. After Bailey stole second,
Anthony D'Onofrio singled to right field to drive in the second run. The Pride took advantage of two more errors in the sixth to score three runs. After a walk and a hit batter,
Kevin Bruggeman dropped a bunt down the third base line that he beat out for a hit, but the throw to first was wild and allowed two runs to score. After a bunt moved Bruggeman over to third, Marrero reached on an error to score Bruggeman with the Pride's fifth run.
Camarda faced his biggest threat in the seventh as he gave up a two-out single and double to put runners on second and third before striking out a Northeastern pinch-hitter for the third out to escape the jam.
Bruggeman finished the nightcap 2-4 with a run scored, while Florides was 1-2 with an RBI.
Sebastian Keane (4-5) took the loss after being charged with four runs on four hits over five innings. Luke Masiuk went 2-3 in the game for Northeastern.
In the opener, the Huskies scored five times in the top of the first inning and didn't look back in a 6-2 victory in seven innings. Cam Schlittler (4-7) picked up the win for Northeastern after allowing two runs on eight hits over six innings of work.
