Ryan Morash went 4-5 with five RBIs to pace a 13-hit day for the Pride in a 15-8 victory at Saint Peter's Tuesday afternoon at Jaroschak Field. Hofstra pulled away from the Peacocks in the eighth after the home team made it a one-run game in the seventh. The win was Hofstra's second in a row and improved the Pride's overall record to 23-21.
After falling behind, 2-0, in the bottom of the second inning, the Pride responded with a three-run third inning to take the lead for good. Hofstra loaded the bases and scored its first run on a RBI ground out from
Brian Morrell.
Steve Harrington followed with a two-run double to put the Pride on top, 3-2.
Hofstra would add a run in the fourth on an RBI single from
Michael Florides and then plated two more in the sixth on a two-run double from
Will Kennedy. Hofstra extend the lead to 9-2 after the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs in the frame.
Santino Rosso had an RBI single and Morash drove in two runs with a single of his own.
The Peacocks (7-37) scored six times in the bottom of the seventh to make it a one-run game. Tom Buckman had a two-run single and Jeff Massicotte added a two-run double in the inning.
The Pride answered in the top of the eighth with six runs of their own to take a 15-8 lead. Hofstra loaded the bases with no outs and got a sacrifice fly from
Nick Marrero to open the floodgates. Rosso drew a walk to force in a run followed by a bases clearing triple from Morash that made it 14-8. Florides capped the scoring with a ground out that plated Morash.
Steven Kaenzig, Hofstra second of five pitchers on the day, was credited with the win after allowing three runs on two hits with five strikeouts in 4 1/3 innings.
Aljo Sujak went 1 1/3 scoreless before
Zack Bailey came on and pitched a scoreless ninth inning.
Saint Peter's starter Jack Gannon (0-7) took the loss, allowing six runs on six hits over 5 2/3 innings.
Hofstra returns to action Friday at 3 p.m. when it hosts James Madison in the opening game of a three-game series.
Notes:
-Seven of Hofstra's nine starters recorded hits in the game with Morash, Morrell, Harrington, and Florides posting multi-hit games.
-Kaenzig has won his last two decisions.
-Hofstra defeated Saint Peter's in all three meetings this season and is 13-2 against them all-time.
-Hofstra batters drew a season-high tying seven walks and stole a season-high tying four bases.
