BB: Hofstra Downs UNCW In 10; Moves On In Winner's Bracket

Greensboro, NC - Michael Florides drove in Jake Liberatore with the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning and Michael O'Hanlon worked around a leadoff single and an error in the bottom of the inning as third-seeded Hofstra advanced in the winner's bracket at the Colonial Athletic Association Baseball Championship with a 4-3 victory over second-seeded UNCW Thursday evening at UNCG Baseball Stadium. The Pride moves on to face the fifth-seeded Huskies of Northeastern Friday night at 7 p.m.

Hofstra won its seventh consecutive game and improved to 28-21. The Seahawks slipped to 31-23 with the loss.

Hofstra got on the board with a two-out rally in the second without the benefit of a base hit. Santino Rosso was hit by a pitch and would end up on third following back-to-back-walks issued by UNCW starter R.J. Sales. Rosso would then score on a wild pitch to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.

Hofstra would tack on two more runs in the third as Will Kennedy led off with a single and went to third on a single by Brian Morrell, who would take second on the throw. Kevin Bruggman drove in Kennedy and moved Morrell to third with a ground out for a 2-0 lead. Steve Harrington, who hit the game-winning sacrifice fly in Hofstra's win over Elon on Wednesday, delivered another as he lifted a fly ball to left field to allow Morrell to score to make it 3-0.

UNCW finally got to Hofstra starter Mark Faello in the sixth as Jac Croom was hit by a pitch, moved to second on a wild pitch, and scored on Chris Thorburn's double down the right field line. The Seahawks would tie the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with Thorburn driving in a run with a single and Noah Bridges delivering the tying run with a sacrifice fly to center.

Following a scoreless ninth, the Pride got things started in the 10th as Liberatore drew a leadoff walk and went to second on a sacrifice bunt from Rosso. Liberatore would move to third on a ground out before Florides found the hole on the left side for what turned out to be the game-winning hit.

UNCW got a leadoff single to start the bottom of the 10th inning from Croom and following a throwing error on a fielder's choice, the Seahawks had the winning run at first base. However, O'Hanlon struck out the next batter and then induced an game-ending double play.

Faello was outstanding, allowing two runs on seven hits with five strikeouts in seven-plus innings of work in the no-decision. O'Hanlon picked up the win to improve to 3-2 on the season.

Hunter Hodges (3-2) took the loss in relief, allowing a run on one hit and two walks in two innings.

Notes:
-Hofstra's seven-game winning streak is the Pride's longest since an identical seven-game streak in 2018.
-Florides and Kennedy each had three hits in the game.
-Ryan Morash extended his hitting streak to nine games.
-This marks the first time that Hofstra has posted two wins at the CAA Championship.
