Newark, DE - Behind a pair of hat tricks from
Dylan McIntosh and
Rory Jones, plus a strong defensive effort in the second half, the Hofstra men's lacrosse team comes away with a 12-11 win over Delaware from Delaware Stadium for the first Colonial Athletic Association win of the season.
The win snaps a three-game losing streak and puts Hofstra at 5-7 overall and 1-1 in the CAA, while Delaware drops to 6-5 overall and 0-2 in league play.
In addition to excellent outings from McIntosh and Jones,
Sterlyn Ardrey produced two goals off the bench for the Pride, while
Griffin Turner added two assists and a goal for the visitors.
Chase Patterson went 15-27 on face-offs with eight ground balls, and
Mac Gates made 11 stops between the pipes in today's win.
Hofstra and Delaware traded goals inside the first four minutes of the opening quarter, with McIntosh bagging his first of the day for the Pride's opener, before both teams went silent for the next six minutes. The Fightin' Blue Hens broke the scoreless run with a goal but McIntosh scored his second to even the score. Delaware scored back-to-back goals within one minute to put themselves ahead by two with 1:07 left, before
Ryan Sheridan scored on an empty-net goal with 55 seconds left to put the Pride down one at the end of the first.
Delaware scored two of the first three goals of the second quarter, with
Gerard Kane scoring for Hofstra at 11:59, to lead by two five minutes into the frame. The Pride roared back with three straight goals over a span of nearly seven minutes to go up, 7-6, to end the first half. Ardrey scored his first to start the run, while Jones tied the score at 3:17, and
Corey Kale scored a man-down goal with 53 seconds left before halftime to give Hofstra its lead.
Jones scored his second to give Hofstra a two-goal lead one minute into the third quarter, but Delaware tied it up with two goals inside seven seconds. Ardrey's second strike of the afternoon sparked another 3-0 Pride run, with a goal by Turner and McIntosh's third put the Pride in front, 11-8, entering the fourth quarter.
A Delaware goal at 13:57 made it a two-goal game, but Jones' third proved to be the difference maker as the redshirt freshman made it a 12-9 contest with 12:34 to go. Despite two Delaware goals inside the final five minutes, Gates and the Hofstra defense stood tall as the Pride picked up its first road win over the Fightin' Blue Hens since 2017.
JP Ward and Mike Robinson scored three goals for Delaware, and Reed Kurtz scored twice and added an assist. Paul Reidy started for Delaware and made seven saves in 26:43 of action, while Matt Kilkeary played 33:17 in relief and made eight stops.
