MLAX: Gates Makes 15 Saves as Hofstra Falls in Close CAA Contest

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra junior Mac Gates posted 15 saves in today's game, including eight in the first half, but the Pride dropped a 10-7 home contest to Colonial Athletic Association rival Drexel on a Saturday afternoon from James M. Shuart Stadium.

The loss puts Hofstra at 5-8 overall and 1-2 in the conference, while Drexel moves to 6-5 overall and 2-1 against CAA opponents.

His 15 saves gives Gates his 11th game this season with double-digit saves. Hofstra had seven different goalscorers in today's game, while Sam Lutfi and Gerard Kane each had two points on one goal and one assist. Rory Jones, Ryan Sheridan, Justin Sykes, and Colton Rudd also found the back of the net for the Pride, and Tom Ford and Dylan McIntosh dished out assists in today's game.

The Dragons scored the first two goals of the afternoon before Turner put the Pride on the board at 6:58. Drexel made it a 3-1 score three minutes later, but Lutfi finished off a pass from Ford for a fast-break goal 30 seconds later, bringing the score to 3-2 after the first quarter.

Neither side could break through in the second quarter until Drexel scored with 3:55 left on the clock. Hofstra made it a one-goal game with an unassisted tally from Kane, but Drexel scored just five seconds before the horn sounded to put the score at 5-3 entering halftime.

The Dragons broke the game open with a four-goal run inside the first seven minutes of the third quarter. Held to just three goals in the first half, Hofstra scored three unanswered goals in the final 6:22 of the third quarter to cut the deficit to three. Jones started off the run with his 16th of the season, while Sykes buried his 10th of the year, and Rudd scored his sixth of the campaign.

Sheridan brought the Pride to within two with his ninth goal of the season with 8:46 left in the fourth quarter, but a goal by the Dragons with 6:00 left on the clock put the Drexel lead back to three. Drexel goalie Ross Blumenthal made three saves in the final six minutes of the game, helping the Dragons to their second CAA win of the year.

Zach Augustine scored twice for the Dragons today, while Sean Donnelly assisted twice and scored once to lead all players with three points. Blumenthal made 10 saves for the visitors to pick up his third win of the season.
