Brian Morrell homered for Hofstra's lone run, and
Anthony D'Onofrio and
Michael Florides each had two hits in an 18-1 loss at Rutgers Tuesday at Bointon Park. The Scarlet Knights entered the game ranked 24th in the nation by Collegiate Baseball.
Hofstra slipped to 18-17 with the loss while Rutgers improved to 33-9 with the win.
Rutgers broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third, pushing six runs across. Morrell made it a 6-1 game with a home run to left field leading off the fourth inning, but that would be the only run the Pride would muster. The Scarlet Knights scored at least two runs in the fourth through seventh innings against five Pride pitchers.
D'Onofrio had a double in the fifth inning and added a single in the ninth, while Florides had singles in the third and fifth innings.
Will Kennedy,
Jake Liberatore, and
Anthony Fontana also had hits for the Pride.
Starting pitcher
Aljo Sujak (1-1) took the loss for the Pride. Making a spot start in the midweek contest, Sujak allowed three runs on three hits over 2 1/3 innings.
Wyatt Parliament (5-0) picked up the win for Rutgers, allowing a run on five hits over five innings of work. Ryan Lasko had four hits and four RBIs for the Scarlet Knights, while Danny DiGeorgio, Chris Brito, and Tony Santa Maria each drove in three runs in the game.
Hofstra returns to action on Friday night at William & Mary. First pitch in the opener of a three-game series is 6 p.m.
