MLAX: Hofstra Falls in CAA Clash to Massachusetts on Senior Day

Hempstead, NY - In the final home game of the 2022 season for the Hofstra men's lacrosse team, the Pride suffered a 13-9 defeat to visiting Massachusetts on a sunny Saturday afternoon from James M. Shuart Stadium on Senior Day.

The Pride slips to 5-9 overall and 1-3 in Colonial Athletic Association play as the season draws closer to its conclusion, and the Minutemen improve to 7-5 overall and 2-2 in the CAA.

Rory Jones, Gerard Kane, and Griffin Turner all scored two goals for Hofstra, while Kane and Turner added two assists each for four points. Dylan McIntosh scored once and assisted once for the Pride, and Matt Elder and Corey Kale found the back of the net. In between the pipes for Hofstra was Mac Gates, and the redshirt junior made 11 saves for the hosts.

The Minutemen opened the game with a 3-0 run in the first quarter, blanking the Pride after the first 15 minutes. Jones got the Pride on the board on a man-up opportunity at 13:28 of the second quarter, and Kane made it a one-goal contest at 8:56. Massachusetts went on another three-goal burst to extend their lead to four with 3:08 left on the clock. The Pride responded with a 3-0 run of their own, with scores coming from Kane at 2:21, and Turner at 1:55 and 1:03, putting the score at 6-5 entering halftime.

The teams traded goals throughout the third quarter, with Massachusetts never able to lead by more than two and Hofstra unable to even the score. Jones scored his second of the afternoon at 11:16, and McIntosh found the back of the net at 3:22, as the Minutemen carried a 9-7 lead into the fourth following an extra-man goal at 2:05.

The visitors broke the game open with three unanswered goals in the first half of the fourth quarter, putting the Minutemen lead to 12-7 with 8:29 left to go. Kale scored on a man-down opportunity at 6:48 of the quarter, and Elder scored on a rebound goal with 4:36 still to play, but Massachusetts prevented the Pride from scoring on any more opportunities while adding a late strike with 1:42 remaining.

Aidan Kaminska, Logan Liljeberg, and Mike Tobin all scored hat-tricks for the Minutemen today, while Liljeberg assisted twice. Caleb Hammett carried Massachusetts with 16-25 at the face-off circle, and Matt Knote made 15 saves.

Prior to the start of today's game, Head Coach Seth Tierney and the Hofstra men's lacrosse program honored graduating seniors Jacob Addeche, Tim Hegarty, Brian Herber, Bryan McIntosh, Dylan McIntosh, Sean Paton, James Philbin, and Charlie Ragault.

Hofstra closes out the regular season next Saturday, April 30, on the road with a contest against Towson at 12 p.m.

NOTES:
-Hofstra committed its lowest amount of turnovers this season with just nine, compared to 15 for Massachusetts. The Pride caused eight of Massachusetts' 15 turnovers, with Sam Lutfi forcing three to lead the team.
-The Pride held Massachusetts to just 1-6 on extra-man opportunities, and went 1-2 with a man-up against the Minutemen.
-Dylan McIntosh, Rory Jones, and Gerard Kane extended their streaks of consecutive games with at least one point to 14, 12, and 11 respectively.
-Bryan McIntosh forced two turnovers today for his 13th game with multiple caused turnovers this season.
-Hofstra is now 22-27 all-time against Massachusetts.
