Towson, MD -
Rory Jones scored the game-winning goal for Hofstra with only six seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, propelling the Pride to a 15-14 road win over Towson on a picturesque Saturday afternoon from Johnny Unitas Stadium in the final game of the regular season.
A redshirt freshman from Abington, Maryland, only 30 minutes from the Towson campus, Jones collected a loose ball at the top of Towson's half of the field with 15 seconds left in regulation with the score tied at 14-14. He drove to the left before rolling to his right and setting himself up with time and space to shoot. He unleashed a hard low-to-high shot, beating Towson goalie Shane Brennan for the winner.
Hofstra ends the regular season with a 6-9 overall record and a 2-3 mark in the CAA, and Towson drops to 6-8 and 3-2 in the conference with the loss.
Jones ended the game with two goals, none bigger than his second of the contest, and added an assist, while
Dylan McIntosh pounded Towson for five goals and an assist for six points.
Justin Sykes tied a season-high with four goals against the Tigers, and
Gerard Kane scored a pair of goals in the first quarter.
McIntosh and Kane gave Hofstra a 2-0 lead to minutes into the contest, but Towson tied it up with two goals inside of one minute. The Pride exploded for a 5-1 run inside the final 10 minutes of the quarter, including three straight from 6:29 to 4:23 of the frame. Kane and McIntosh put Hofstra back in front, and goals by McIntosh, Jones, and
Matt Elder gave Hofstra a four-goal lead inside five minutes. Towson ended the run at 3:19, putting the score at 7-4 in favor of Hofstra.
Neither team found the back of the net until Sykes scored his first at 6:47 of the second quarter. Sykes added a second at 5:00, giving Hofstra a 9-4 lead late in the quarter. The Tigers made it a four-goal game at halftime with a goal of their own at 3:03.
Sterlyn Ardrey scored his sixth of the year to make it a five-goal Hofstra lead to start the third quarter, but a pair of Towson goals reduced the Pride advantage to three. Sykes finished his hattrick and McIntosh's fourth of the day gave the Pride a 12-7 lead going into the fourth quarter. A run of five-unanswered goals lasting nearly eight minutes evened the score at 12-12 with 6:37 to go. Sykes bagged his fourth goal with 6:22 to go, but Towson responded with a 5:08 goal. McIntosh's fifth of the day came off a pass from Jones with 2:38, but Towson tied the score once again with 41 seconds to go. Jones' goal with six seconds left put the Pride back in front for good, as the clock ran out on the ensuing face-off.
Nick DeMaio paced Towson with six points on four goals and two assists, and Dylan Avanzato scored three goals and dished out an assist for four points. Shane Brennan made 11 saves for the Tigers, and Matt Constantinides went 19-32 on face-offs with a goal.
Despite the win over Towson, a Delaware victory over Fairfield eliminates the Pride from CAA postseason competition.
