Fairfield, CT - Hosts Fairfield scored seven goals in the second half, including four in the fourth quarter, as Hofstra dropped its Colonial Athletic Association opener, 12-10, to the Stags Saturday afternoon from Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium.
Hofstra falls to 4-7 overall and 0-1 in the conference, while Fairfield opens CAA play with a 1-0 record and moves to 6-4 overall.
Mac Gates set a new personal-best with 18 saves against Fairfield, with six saves coming in the third quarter.
Gerard Kane and
Sam Lutfi both finished with three goals and an assist, while
Bryan McIntosh led all Hofstra players with four caused turnovers, and
Chase Patterson collected eight ground balls while going 12-24 on face-offs.
The game started off with a bang as the teams combined for seven goals in the first quarter.
Matt Elder opened the Pride's account at 13:39 of the first quarter, but Fairfield scored two straight to pull ahead three minutes into the start of the action. Lutfi tied it up at 8:43, and Kane tied the score back up after Fairfield scored a goal of their own. Lutfi scored his second of the quarter off an unassisted shot at 3:21, putting the Pride ahead 4-3.
Kane scored the next two Hofstra goals in the second quarter, and Lutfi finished his hat-trick off feed from Elder to make it a 7-4 scoreline for the Pride. The Stags found the back of the net once more in the quarter, and the teams would go into the halftime break with Hofstra on top, 7-5.
Dylan McIntosh scored his first of the day to start the third quarter, but the Stags scored three straight over a span of 11 minutes, evening the score at 8-8 going into the final quarter. McIntosh scored his second of the day off a lengthy assist from
Tom Ford, and
Daniel Ochs scored the first goal of his career off a stymied Fairfield clear, giving Hofstra a two-goal cushion with 10:19 to go in the fourth. Fairfield ended the game on a 4-0 run, including the game-winner with 1:21 left, to pick up its first CAA win since 2018.
Mike Drake led Fairfield with six points on three goals and three assists, while Kyle Borda scored twice and assisted once for three points, and Jack McKenna and Taylor Strough scored twice. James Corasaniti picked up the win for the Stags with six saves made.
The Pride continues its CAA schedule next Saturday, April 9, against #17 Delaware. Face-off between the Pride and the Fightin' Blue Hens is set for 12 p.m. from Newark, Delaware.
