Hempstead, NY -
Steve Harrington's ninth inning home run gave Hofstra a 7-6 win in dramatic fashion in game two as Hofstra split a Colonial Athletic Association doubleheader with College of Charleston Saturday afternoon at University Field. The win gave Hofstra a conference series victory for the second time in as many weekends. Charleston won the opening game, 4-0.
Hofstra moved to 12 -10 overall and 4-2 in CAA play with the split. The Cougars are 16-12 overall and 4-2 in league action.
The Pride rallied from a pair of deficits to earn the game two win. Charleston held a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of the sixth before Hofstra came back with four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a one-run lead.
Anthony D'Onofrio singled in a run to open the scoring, while
Brian Morrell made it a 3-2 game with a sacrifice fly.
Nick Marrero gave the Pride the lead with a two-run home run to left field, his third home run of the season.
The Cougars snatched the lead back in the seventh on a three-run home run from Trotter Harlan before Hofstra answered once again in their half of the inning as D'Onofrio came through again with a two-run double to the score at six.
In the bottom of the ninth, Harrington, who had entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh and stayed in the game in left field, came up with one out and took a 2-0 pitch from Cole Mathis (2-2) over the fence in right center for his fourth home run of the year and his second ninth inning, game-winning blast.
Michael O'Hanlon (1-1) picked up the win in relief after working the final 2 2/3 innings. He allowed a pair of runs with four strikeouts. D'Onofrio (2-4, 3 RBIs),
Kevin Bruggeman (2-4, 1 run), and
Zack Bailey (2-4, 1 run) each had big days at the plate for the Pride.
In the opener, Daniel Brooks (2-2) and William Privette (fifth save) combined on the shutout, allowing just six hits and two walks with nine strikeouts. Donald Hansis had a solo home run in the sixth that would give Charleston all the runs they would need, though they added an insurance run in the seventh and two more in the ninth.
Tristan Nemjo (0-4) took the hard-luck loss after allowing a run on three hits in six innings.
Hofstra returns to action Tuesday when it hosts LIU at 3 p.m.
