Fairfield, CT - Hofstra erased a 2-0 deficit, scoring nine runs between the fifth and seventh innings to take a 9-3 victory over Fairfield Tuesday afternoon at Alumni Diamond. The win was Hofstra's second in a row and third in the last four games.
The Pride moved to 16-15 on the season with the victory, while Fairfield slipped to 19-15 with the loss and saw its four-game win streak come to a halt.
The Stags struck first, scoring twice in the third after loading the bases with two outs. Mike Caruso was hit by a pitch to force in the first run with the second scoring on a passed ball.
Hofstra would take the lead for good in the fifth with
Michael Florides delivering a two-run single to tie the game and then, after stealing two bases, scoring the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.
Brian Morrell would cap the scoring in the inning with a RBI infield single. Hofstra would add a run in the sixth as
Kevin Bruggeman led off with a triple and came in on a double from
Jake Liberatore. The Pride would use one swing of the bat to add four runs in the seventh as Bruggeman connected on his first career grand slam to make it a 9-2 game. Fairfield would get a solo home run from Mike Becchetti leading off the ninth to account for its final run.
Garrett Sullivan (2-0) picked up the win in relief for the Pride, throwing 3 1/3 scoreless innings. He allowed two hits and struck out three.
Cullen SantaMaria went the final three innings for his first career save. Fairfield starter Peter Ostensen (2-1) was tagged with the loss after allowing three runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings of work.
Morrell, Bruggeman, and Liberatore each had a pair of hits for the Pride.
Hofstra is back in action Friday at Towson in the start of a three-game Colonial Athletic Association series. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
