Hempstead, NY -
Kevin Bruggeman's 10th-inning infield single knocked in the winning run as Hofstra rallied from a 5-1 deficit to post a 6-5 victory over Delaware Sunday afternoon at University Field. The win gave Hofstra a Colonial Athletic Association series victory for the third time in four chances.
Hofstra evened its record at 15-15 overall and improved to 7-5 in CAA play. Delaware is 20-13 overall and 5-4 in league play.
Delaware took advantage of a Hofstra error in the first inning to plate two unearned runs on Joey Loynd's two-run single. The Pride cut the deficit in half in the fourth as Bruggeman drove in
Will Kennedy with a fielder's choice grounder.
The Blue Hens would get a run in the sixth on a Nick Vera RBI double, and then added two more in the seventh on Joseph's Carpenter's double, to the fence in centerfield, to make it a 5-1 game.
As has been the case all season, there was no quit in the Pride. Hofstra has scored 46 runs from the seventh inning-on this season and added to that total with a four-run seventh that tied the game. Bruggeman started the rally off with a single up the middle and moved to second on
Jake Liberatore's single. Both runners moved up on a groundout and
Santino Rosso followed with a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-2 game.
Ryan Morash followed with a single that plated Liberatore and prompted a pitching change for Delaware. Zach Klapak came on in relief of starter Wyatt Nelson and issued a walk to his first batter,
Anthony D'Onofrio, and then uncorked a wild pitch to put runners on second and third.
Will Kennedy singled to third base to allow Morash to score and D'Onofrio would score the tying run on a wild pitch.
Delaware got a leadoff double in the eighth but
Michael O'Hanlon came on to pitch, and struck out the next two batters and got a fly out to end the threat. O'Hanlon got in a jam in the ninth, as Delaware loaded the bases with one out. But Morash made a diving stop on a ball up the middle and turned a 6-3 double play to get out of the inning.
In the bottom of the 10th, Hofstra had runners on second and third with two outs when Bruggeman hit a slow chopper to short. Hustling out of the box, Bruggeman beat the throw and allowed
Will Kennedy to score the winning run.
O'Hanlon (2-1) picked up the win after allowing no runs on two hits with three strikeouts over three innings of work.
Brad Camarda started and allowed five runs (three earned) on eight hits over 6 1/3 innings.
Bruggeman finished 2-5 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored for the Pride. Kennedy, who was making his first start in more than a month after being out with a foot injury, was 2-2 with an RBI, two runs, and three walks.
Klapak (4-1) took the loss for Delaware after allowing two runs on three hits in three innings. Nelson allowed four runs on five hits over 6 2/3 innings. Bryce Greenly had three hits and scored two runs for Delaware. Carpenter, Loynd and John Weglarz each had a pair of hits.
Hofstra is back in action Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Fairfield.
