BB: Camarda, Morrell Shine As Hofstra Splits Pair Of Games On Sunday

Hempstead, NY - Brad Camarda threw a gem in the first game and Brian Morrell provided the majority of the offense as Hofstra picked up a 6-2 win over Saint Peter's in the first of two games for the Pride Sunday at University Field. Hofstra dropped the second game to LIU by the score of 8-4.

The Pride is now 4-3 on the season following the split. Saint Peter's moves to 3-5, while LIU is 5-6.

Camarda (1-0) went seven innings in his game one start, allowing one run on two hits with seven strikeouts. The senior right-hander did not walk a batter in his outing. Mike McKenna got the final four outs for the Pride to notch his first save of the season.

The Peacocks got on the board first, plating a run in the top of the third as Anthony Abbatine doubled and later came in on a wild pitch.

The Pride wasted no time and scored twice in the bottom of the inning. Aidan Larkin singled, went to second on a wild pitch and scored on Santino Rosso's single through the right side. Following a two out steal by Rosso and a wild pitch to send him to third, Morrell put Hofstra ahead to stay with an RBI double to left center.

Hofstra would tack on three more runs in the seventh on Morrell's first home run of the year, a three-run shot to right center. The Peacocks would get a run in the eighth off of Aljo Sujak before McKenna came on to shut the door, recording a pair of strikeouts in his five-batter stint. The Pride added another insurance run in the eight on a Michael Florides sacrifice fly.

Morrell finished 3-4 with four RBIs and a run scored. Larkin was 2-3 with a run scored.

In the second game, the Sharks of LIU used a five-run sixth inning to take a 6-3 lead on the way to an 8-4 victory. The loss ended a three-game winning streak for the Pride.

Hofstra fell behind in the first following a solo home run from LIU's EJ Exposito but rallied back right away in the bottom of the frame as Rosso led off with a single and the next batter, Ryan Morash, homered over the left field fence to give the Pride a 2-1 lead. The Pride loaded the bases in the third following three consecutive one-out singles. Steve Harrington delivered a run with an RBI ground out to make it a 3-1 game but Hofstra left two men in scoring position.

In the LIU sixth, the first seven batters reached base as the Sharks scored five runs. Giovanni Ciaccio drew a bases loaded walk to make it 3-2. Chris Wasson followed with a bloop single to tie the game. Colin Adams put LIU up, 4-3, as he was hit in the helmet with a pitch to force in the go-ahead run. Carlton Harper had the big hit, a two run single that made it 6-3.

Hofstra tried to stage a two-out rally in the eighth, putting two men on after the first two outs were made before Jake Liberatore drove in one with a single to left. LIU put up two more runs in the ninth to go ahead by four. Hofstra tried to rally again in the ninth with two down, but Zack Bailey and Morrell were stranded after drawing two-out walks.

Rosso, Morash, Morrell, and Nick Marrero each had a pair of hits in the nightcap. John Mikolaicyk (0-1) took the loss for Hofstra after being charged with five runs on five hits in five innings of work.

Exposito had a three-hit game for the Sharks and reliever Ryan Neuwiler (1-1) pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just one hit, to earn the win in relief. Josh Gainer pitched the final two innings for his second save of the season.

Hofstra returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Manhattan at University Field. Game time is 3 p.m.
