Elon, NC - Elon jumped out to a 4-0 lead and would hold off multiple Hofstra rallies as the Phoenix posted a 6-5 victory Saturday afternoon at Latham Park. The win evened the Colonial Athletic Association series at one game apiece.
Hofstra, which got within one run on three occasions, slips to 9-8 overall and 1-1 in the CAA with the loss. Elon improves to 12-10 overall and 1-1 in league action.
Elon would score a run in the fourth and then added three in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. Parker Haskin had the big hit in the fifth, a two-run single that capped the scoring.
Hofstra rallied for three runs in the sixth, loading the bases with no outs. After a fielder's choice that resulted in an out at home, the Pride took advantage of a throwing error on a pickoff attempt to score their first run.
Anthony D'Onofrio then delivered a two-run single to get the Pride within one at 4-3.
The Phoenix got a run back in the bottom of the inning after a leadoff double, a sacrifice bunt, and a sacrifice fly. However, Hofstra put together three straight singles in the seventh to get within one again on
Jake Liberatore's base hit.
Cole Reynolds gave Elon a two-run cushion in the seventh with an RBI double before Hofstra roared back in the top of the eighth as
Nick Marrero's pinch hit home run pulled the Pride within one once again, 6-5. Hofstra would put the tying run in scoring position in the ninth with no outs but Ben Simon came on to strike out the next three batters to end the threat and earn the save.
Brian Edgerton (4-0) got the win for Elon, allowing three runs on five hits in 5 1/3 innings. Justin Cassella had two of Elon's seven hits.
Tristan Nemjo (0-3) took the loss for the Pride after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits in five innings. The sophomore struck out a career-high seven batters.
Brian Morrell was 3-4 with two runs scored, while
Steve Harrington went 2-4 with a run scored.
The teams conclude the series Sunday at 12 p.m.
