BB: Hofstra Offense Erupts For 14 Runs, 16 Hits In Win Over Merrimack

Hempstead, NY - Santino Rosso went 3-5 with a two-run home run, a double, and four runs scored as Hofstra bashed a season-high 16 hits in a 14-5 victory over Merrimack Sunday afternoon at University Field. The 14 runs were also a season-best for the Pride.

Hofstra moved to 8-6 overall on the season while Merrimack slipped to 3-9-1.

Hofstra would score at least one run in each of the first seven innings and started off the game with a pair of runs in the first. Rosso and Sean Flaherty drew walks to begin the frame and Brian Morrell followed with an RBI single. Two batters later, Anthony D'Onofrio delivered a run with a fielder's choice grounder.

The Pride would add three runs in the second, scoring on an error, an RBI single from Morrell, and a wild pitch.

The Pride tacked on four more in the third with Matt Pelcher notching an RBI single and Ross a two-run home run in the inning. D'Onofrio would hit a solo home run in the fifth that stayed just inside the left field foul pole, while Kevin Bruggeman knocked in a pair of runs in the fifth with a single. Hofstra would get a run in the sixth on a balk before Bruggeman capped the Pride's scoring in the seventh with an RBI double.

Hofstra starter Brad Camarda (3-0) retired 15 of the first 16 batters, giving up a fifth inning walk, before surrendering a leadoff single in the sixth. The Warriors would put two men on before Michael Golankiewicz cleared the bases with a home run to right field that made it a 12-3 game. Camarda allowed three runs on three hits in six innings and struck out five. The Pride would use five relievers to close out the final three innings.

In addition to Rosso's three hits, Morrell finished with three hits and a pair of RBIs. Bruggeman, D'Onofrio, Flaherty, and Ryan Morash each had a pair of hits.  
Hofstra returns to action Tuesday at St. John's. First pitch from Kaiser Stadium is set for 3 p.m.

Notes:
-Hofstra is 1-1 all-time versus Merrimack.
-Bruggeman drove in three runs.
-Flaherty scored three times, while Zack Bailey, Morash, and Matt Pelcher each scored twice.
-Pelcher drove in his first career run with a third inning single.
-Jake Halloran made his collegiate debut on the mound.
-Garrett Sullivan pitched a perfect inning of relief with one strikeout.
