BB: Hofstra Gives Up Late Lead, Falls At St. John's

Queens, NY - St. John's scored four runs in the eighth inning without recording a base hit to take a 9-7 lead and then staved off Hofstra's ninth-inning rally attempt to pick up the victory Tuesday evening at Jack Kaiser Stadium. The Pride loaded the bases with one out but could not push across any runs.

Hofstra slipped to 8-7 on the season with the loss, while the Red Storm improved to 6-14 with their fourth consecutive victory.

The Pride rallied from a 4-1 deficit in the sixth, scoring four times to take a 5-4 lead. Steve Harrington had a pinch-hit, two-run double to make it 4-3 and Ryan Morash followed with a two-run double of his own to put Hofstra on top. The Pride tacked on a run in the seventh as Santino Rosso came in on a double play grounder to make it a 6-4 game.

David Glancy's third solo home run of the game leading off the seventh brought the Red Storm to within one at 6-5. However, the Pride would add another run in the eighth as Anthony D'Onofrio led off with a double, his fourth hit of the game, and later came in to score on a fielder's choice off the bat of Harrington as he beat the throw home to give Hofstra a 7-5 advantage.

The Pride could not hold the lead as the Red Storm staged a two-out rally to go ahead. Hofstra reliever Chris Keenan issues a leadoff walk but retired the next two batters. He then issued three consecutive walks to force in a run and make it 7-6. Steven Kaenzig came on to replace Keenan and walked both batters he faced, allowing two runs to score as St. John's took an 8-7 lead. Hofstra's next pitcher, Garrett Sullivan, had a run score on a passed ball but got out of the inning without further damage.

Facing St. John's closer Chuck Sanzio in the top of the ninth, Hofstra loaded the bases with one out on a pair of walks and a single. Sanzio escaped the jam with a strikeout and a fly out to secure his third save of the season. Oliver McCarthy (1-2) earned the win after pitching the eighth inning. Glancy was 3-3 with his three home runs, four runs, and four RBIs

Keenan (1-1) took the loss for the Pride, allowing five runs (four earned) on one hit and four walks in two innings of work. D'Onofrio was 4-5 with two runs and an RBI. Harrington had three RBIs.

Hofstra returns to action Friday night at Elon in the Colonial Athletic Association opener for both teams. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
