WLAX: Guerra Tallies Hat Trick In Strong Hofstra Effort

Hempstead, NY - Senior Amanda Guerra had her third career hat trick, and first of the season, while graduate student Arianna Esposito added a pair of goals for the Hofstra women's lacrosse team in a 12-6 defeat to #6 Stony Brook on Friday evening at James M. Shuart Stadium.

The loss ends the Pride's five-game win streak, which ranked as the seventh-longest in program history. Hofstra slips to 6-2 with the loss, while Stony Brook improved to 4-2 with the win.

Goals from Esposito and senior Erin Demek in the game's first seven minutes allowed the Pride to take an early 2-1 lead over the Seawolves.

The highly-competitive contest would see Stony Brook notch a pair of goals to lead 3-2 before Guerra tallied her first of the game just over a minute into the second quarter to even the score.

Esposito would close the gap to two at the intermission with a free-position goal and then Guerra opened the second half scoring with her second of the contest to make it a one-goal game.

Stony Brook would use a 6-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarter to take a commanding lead before Guerra closed the scoring in the game and completed her hat trick with 53 seconds remaining.

Junior Taylor Mennella had two assists for the Pride, which got a strong game from freshman Brynn Hepting who had a game-high six draw controls, along with a ground ball and a caused turnover. Graduate student Shannon Boyle and senior Jackie Gatti each chipped in with a pair of ground balls and a caused turnover for Hofstra, with Boyle adding a draw control.

Ellie Masera posted seven points on six goals and an assist for the Seawolves, while Kyla Zapolski added a goal and two assists. Masera and Clare Levy had five draw controls for Stony Brook.

Hofstra returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Vanderbilt at 12 p.m. Tickets are available at HofstraTickets.com or on game day at Shuart Stadium. The game will also air on FloLive.
