Hempstead, NY - On a rain-soaked Saturday morning from James M. Shuart Stadium, Hofstra came out on top in an 8-4 victory over visiting Manhattan.
The Pride snaps a two-game losing streak and improves to 4-4 on the year, while Manhattan drops to 2-4 following the loss.
Dylan McIntosh,
Gerard Kane and
Rory Jones all scored two goals in today's game, while Jones added an assist to give him three points.
Mac Gates made 11 saves against the Jaspers, and
Bryan McIntosh led the defense with five caused turnovers. At the face-off circle,
Chase Patterson went 11-12, including a perfect 9-9 in the second half, and scooped up six ground balls.
Hofstra jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter after goals by Kane and McIntosh, but the Jaspers kept Hofstra off the board in the second half while scoring three unanswered goals to take a 3-2 lead over the hosts into the halftime break.
Jones scored 42 seconds into the third quarter to even the game at 3-3, and Kane tallied his second of the day at 11:20 to put Hofstra in front for good. The Pride would score twice more in the third quarter to pull ahead, 6-3, over Manhattan, with
Colton Rudd scoring at 8:40 and Jones finding the back of the net for the second time in the quarter at 7:25.
McIntosh and
Ryan Sheridan added the final two goals inside the first two minutes of the fourth quarter, as the Hofstra defense clamped down on Manhattan and allowed only one goal the rest of the way.
Manhattan's leading scorer, Kyle Gucwa, was held to just one goal by the Hofstra defense. Jack Shanley, Brendan O'Sullivan, and Christian Lyons all scored once for the Jaspers, while Jake Nicolosi assisted twice on the day. In net for Manhattan was Brendan Krebs, who matched Gates with 11 saves and scooped up four ground balls.
Hofstra faces its toughest test of season on Saturday, March 19, when #3 Rutgers visits James M. Shuart Stadium for a 1 p.m. contest. The game will be streamed live on the Lax Sports Network. -Hofstra's all-time record over Manhattan is now 4-0. Today's game was the first meeting between the two programs since 2015.
-The four goals allowed today are the fewest goals Hofstra allowed to an opponent since the a 20-4 win over NJIT in 2017.
-Hofstra controlled the ground ball battle, scooping up 38 to Manhattan's 22.
