Providence, RI - Graduate student
Katie Whelan tallied five goals, junior
Taylor Mennella added three goals and an assist, and senior
Jess Smith posted 12 saves as the Hofstra women's lacrosse team captured a dominating 12-7 win over Brown on Tuesday afternoon at Stevenson-Pincince Field.
The victory was the second of the season for Hofstra, which improved to 2-1 with the win. Brown slips to 1-1 on the year with the loss.
Hofstra got on the board first in the game as Mennella scored off a free-position shot in the opening minute. After Brown evened the score at one, the Pride closed the first quarter with three straight goals to lead 4-1 at the break in action. The Hofstra goals came off of three different sticks as Whelan scored the first and the run was aided by additional goals from senior
Amanda Guerra and graduate student
Arianna Esposito.
Each team would score once in the second quarter with Whelan tallying her second of the game and the Pride would take a 5-2 lead into the halftime intermission.
Hofstra broke the game wide open in the third quarter as the Pride scored five straight goals to open the second half to earn a commanding 10-2 lead with just over four minutes left in the third. It was all Whelan and Mennella during the run as Whelan posted the first three goals during the 5-0 spurt and Mennella finished the run with two of her own.
The lead grew to as many as eight, 12-4, as sophomore
Kerry Walser found the back of the net and Guerra scored her second of the game before Brown tallied the game's final three goals to account for the final score.
