Hempstead, NY - The Hofstra women's basketball team put in a strong showing against the Colonial Athletic Association leaders but ultimately fell to Delaware, 71-58 on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex.
The Pride slips to 5-14 overall and 2-9 in the CAA. Delaware moves to 18-5 overall and 12-1 in the conference following Sunday's victory.
Rosi Nicholson led the Pride with 16 points on 6-12 from the floor and added six rebounds and four steals.
Jaylen Hines posted 15 points for her fourth straight game in double figures. She led the team with seven rebounds.
The lead changed four times in the opening quarter before a late run put Hofstra ahead by four. A Hines layup followed by a Nicholson jumper, gave the hosts a 15-11 lead over Delaware before the visitors tied it up with two straight baskets of their own. The Pride scored the final four points of the quarter thanks to a jumper from
Zyheima Swint and a pair of Nicholson free throws, giving Hofstra a 19-15 lead after the first 10 minutes.
Hofstra continued to give the Blue Hens their best as they answered Delaware basket-for-basket throughout the second quarter. Hofstra's lead grew to five inside the final four minutes with a pair of made free throws by
Jahsyni Knight, but Delaware took back the lead with three-straight baskets down the stretch as the first half concluded with the score at 34-33 for the visitors.
Selma Markisic tied the game with a made free throw to start the third quarter and Hines brought the deficit to within one with a jumper following three-straight points from Delaware, but the Blue Hens pulled away from the Pride down the stretch of the third quarter, pulling ahead 57-47. Hofstra hung tough but Delaware maintained the lead, out-scoring Hofstra 14-11 in the final frame.
Jasmine Dickey led all players with 36 points, and also added seven rebounds, four steals and three blocks.. Tyi Skinner also finished in double-figures for Delaware with 12 points, and Ty Battle pulled down 10 rebounds for the Blue Hens.
The Pride is back in action on February 18 in a road CAA contest against Elon. Tip-off at the Schar Center is set for 7 p.m.
NOTES:
-Hofstra's all-time record against Delaware moves to 12-68.
-The Pride scored 14 second-chance points to Delaware's six, and finished with 34 points in the paint to Delaware's 22.
-Hofstra did a great job limiting Delaware on the boards. Delaware entered the game ranked 10th in the nation with 44 rebounds per game, and Hofstra limited the Blue Hens to 36. Delaware was also ranked second in the nation with 17.1 offensive rebounds per game but Hofstra limited the visitors to just nine.
-Both teams were cold shooting beyond the arc as the Pride and Blue Hens combined for 3-of-26 from deep.
