Jaala Henry scored a game-high 15 points and
Jaylen Hines added 12 as Hofstra posted a 56-40 Colonial Athletic Association victory over UNCW Tuesday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. Hofstra never trailed in the game.
The Pride improved to 4-12 on the season and picked up their first CAA victory to move to 1-7 in the league. UNCW slipped to 3-14 overall and 0-7 in CAA action.
Henry also pulled down a game-high eight rebounds and notched three assists and a pair of steals in the contest as well.
Jahsyni Knight had eight points and six rebounds, while
Rosi Nicholson chipped in with six points and seven rebounds. Â Â Â
Hofstra raced out to a 9-0 lead and held UNCW scoreless for the first 4:42. Hines scored five of the Pride's nine points to start the game. The Seahawks got on the board with 5:18 on the clock but did not score again for more than four minutes as the Pride extended the lead to 13-2. A pair of UNCW free throws with 1:16 remaining cut their deficit to nine and that was the end of the scoring as Hofstra led 13-4 after 10 minutes of play.
The Pride maintained their lead in the second quarter, going up by 10, 18-8, following a three-point play from Knight with 6:57 remaining. The Seahawks ran off five unanswered points to cut the Pride's lead to five, but Nicholson got a layup and Henry followed with a three-point play to push the lead back up to 10, 23-13, with 4:40 on the clock. The Hofstra run extended to 11-0 as the Pride led 29-13 at the end of the first half and held UNCW scoreless for the final 5:37. Â
There was no letting up by the Pride in the second half. Hofstra extended its led to 20 points, 35-15, with 1:53 elapsed in the third quarter on a driving layup from Hines. UNCW would answer with five consecutive points and got as close as 14, 37-23, with 3:56 remaining in the third. That was as close as the Seahawks would get as Hofstra went up by as many as 20 points, 54-34, in the fourth quarter. Â
Allie Best and Carrie Gross led UNCW with 12 points each. Evan Miller paced the Seahawks with seven rebounds.
Hofstra will return to action Sunday, February 6 at 2 p.m. when it hosts Northeastern. The game is part of Hofstra's Homecoming Weekend. -Hofstra snapped a 10-game losing streak with the win.
-Hofstra is 22-19 all-time versus UNCW and has won three consecutive meetings.
-UNCW's 40 points were the fewest allowed by the Pride since the Seahawks scored 48 in a 59-48 Hofstra victory on January 31, 2021.
-The Pride held a 44-32 edge in rebounding and a 36-20 advantage in points in the paint.
