WBB: Big Second Quarter Lifts Hofstra Over Northeastern

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra used a dominant second quarter to take control of the game and went on to post a 56-43 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Northeastern Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Pride outscored the Huskies, 19-6, in the second quarter and never relinquished the lead the rest of the way.

Hofstra won for the second time in as many games and improved to 5-12 overall and 2-8 in the CAA. The Huskies slipped to 12-8 overall and 6-4 in league play.

The Pride placed three players in double-figures, led by Jaylen Hines with 18 points. The senior forward also added a season-best 15 rebounds for her third double-double of the season. Jahsyni Knight added 13 points and four assists, while Selma Markisic had 12 points.

Hofstra trailed 16-13 after one quarter of play before dominating the second quarter. The Huskies opened the quarter with a free throw to extend to a four-point lead 43 seconds in. The Pride then scored the next eight points on a pair of free throws from Jaala Henry, a three-pointer from Markisic, a free throw from Hines, and a jumper from Knight to take a 21-17 lead with 6:13 remaining. After a three-pointer from Northeastern's Kendall Currence made it a one-point game, the Pride reeled off seven unanswered to go back up by eight, 28-20, with 2:34 to go. Hines scored three points in the run and had eight in the quarter, including a jumper in the final seconds that sent the Pride into halftime with a 32-22 lead.

Neither team did much offensively in the third quarter, scoring a combined 11 points. Fortunately, Hofstra scored seven of them and extended its lead to 13, 39-26, after 30 minutes of action. The Huskies would score the first four points of the fourth quarter to make it a nine-point game with 8:48 remaining. However, Hofstra scored the next six points with a three-pointer from Knight and three points from Markisic to go back up by 15, 45-30, with 6:51 to go. The Pried would lead by as many as 17 before a 9-0 run from the Huskies cut their deficit to eight, 47-39, with 2:54 to play. Knight stopped the run with a pair from the line three seconds later and Markisic scored the next four points to end any hopes the Huskies had of making a comeback. The Pride would push the lead back to 17, 56-39, before settling for the 13-point victory.

Currence was the only Northeastern player to score more than 10 points as she finished with 14. Claudia Soriano pulled down a team-high nine rebounds and added seven assists.
