Hempstead, NY - Tyrese Elliott's tip-in at the buzzer gave North Carolina A&T an 81-79 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Hofstra Saturday afternoon at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The Aggies scored the final six points of the game.
The Pride slipped to 8-7 overall and 1-1 in league play with the loss. North Carolina A&T improved to 6-9 overall and evened its CAA mark at 1-1.
Tyler Thomas led four Hofstra players in double-figures with 19 points.
Aaron Estrada added 18 points, while
Darlinstone Dubar scored 16 points.
Warren Williams tallied 11 points and eight rebounds.
Jaquan Carlos added six assists to lead the Pride.
Hofstra led 40-35 at the half behind 13 points from Thomas. The opening 20 minutes featured three lead changes and two tie scores. Tied at 18 nearly midway through the stanza, the Pride used a 7-0 run to take a 25-18 lead. Thomas keyed the run with a three-pointer with Estrada adding a pair of free throws and Williams a dunk. The Aggies cut their deficit to two on several occasions, the last at 33-31 with 3:28 to go. However, Hofstra got five free throws from
German Plotnikov and a pullup jumper from Thomas down the stretch to take the five-point lead into the locker room.
The Pride opened the second half with a 9-4 spurt to extend the lead to 10, 49-39, following Thomas' three-pointer with 16:50 on the clock. The lead would grow to as many as 13, 64-51, with just under 10 minutes to go on a layup from Estrada. The Aggies would make it a three-point game with 5:35 to go on Demetric Horton's three-pointer. Hofstra would go back up by six before another Aggie three-pointer made it 73-70 with 3:17 to play. Horton would tie the game at 3 with a three-pointer from the top of the arc with 2:37 to play before Williams hit a hook shot and free throw 20 seconds later to put Hofstra back on top. The Aggies made it a one-point game on their next trip down the floor but Dubar answered with a three-pointer to make it a four-point affair with 1:32 remaining. That would be Hofstra's last basket as Kam Woods hit a jumper followed by back-to-back baskets from Elliott.
Horton led all scorers with 21 points. He was joined in double-figures by Duncan Powell with 18 points, and Eliott and Woods with 12 each. Powell also had a game-high 12 rebounds.
Hofstra returns to action Thursday, January 5 at Hampton. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
