Hofstra Captures Road Win Over Delaware State

Dover, DE – In its final road non-conference game of the season, the Hofstra women's basketball team earned a 59-52 victory over Delaware State from Memorial Hall in Dover, Delaware. The Pride improves to 5-5 with the win over the Lady Hornets.

Brandy Thomas recorded her fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds, and she also logged two assists for the Pride. Zyheima Swint scored 14 points, pulled down eight rebounds, and tallied one block, and Sorelle Ineza finished with 10 points, five rebounds, and three assists for Hofstra.

The Pride led Delaware State (2-7) 14-12 after the first quarter. Hofstra led 6-2 inside the first three minutes of the quarter before the Lady Hornets scored six straight points to pull ahead by two. Hofstra pulled ahead with a three-pointer from Ineza, and a Thomas three gave Hofstra a four-point lead at 2:42. Back-to-back baskets from Delaware State tied the score at 12-12, but a Swint layup with 44 seconds gave Hofstra the lead for good.

Hofstra raced out to a nine-point lead in the second quarter with five points from Thomas and a Swint basket. Delaware State reduced the deficit to four with 5:23 on the clock. Hofstra and Delaware State traded points the rest of the way, with Hofstra never able to lead by more than seven and Delaware State unable to get any closer to the Pride's lead than four points, as the Pride held a 34-30 lead going into halftime.

The game broke open for Hofstra in the third quarter, scoring the first six points of the quarter and going on a 14-2 run lasting 4:50 to lead by 17 over the Lady Hornets. Ineza and Swint scored four points each during the lengthy run, while Thomas, Emma Von Essen, and Alarice Gooden scored two points apiece. Delaware State ended the quarter on a 10-3 run to trail Hofstra, 51-41, going into the fourth quarter.

The Pride held off Delaware State in the fourth quarter to secure the road win. The Lady Hornets cut Hofstra's lead to eight three times in the quarter, but Hofstra would respond with a basket of their own at every opportunity to prevent any attempt at a Delaware State comeback.

Savannah Brooks led the Lady Hornets with 16 points. Jayla Johnson added 11 points in the loss, and Noami Zulueta led all players in today's game with 12 rebounds.

Hofstra concludes its non-conference schedule on December 21 with a home game against New Orleans. Tip-off from the David S.
