Hofstra Closes Non-Conference Slate With Overtime Win

Hempstead, NY - Hofstra outscored New Orleans, 12-8, in overtime to come away with a 64-60 victory Wednesday night at the David S. Mack Sports and Exhibition Complex. The win was Hofstra's second in a row as the Pride improved to 6-5 on the season. The Privateers slipped to 1-8.

Brandy Thomas led three Hofstra players in double-figures with 19 points and added 13 rebounds. Alarice Gooden tallied a season-best 14 points, while Sorelle Ineza posted 13 points.

The first quarter was an offensive struggle for both teams. Thomas opened the scoring nearly two minutes in with a jumper in the paint. New Orleans tied the game more than two minutes later before Gooden drained a three-pointer with 5:04 on the clock to make it 5-2 in favor of the Pride. The Privateers would score the final eight points of the quarter to lead 10-5.

Hofstra ended a 5:32 scoring drought 28 seconds into the second quarter on Rosi Nicholson's fastbreak layup. Following two free throws from New Orleans' Nora Francois that put the Privateers back up by five, Thomas scored five consecutive points to tie the game at 12 with 7:17 on the clock. The teams would trade the lead six times over the next 3:18. The Pride took a 20-18 lead on an Ineza three-pointer with 3:59 to go that keyed a 12-3 run that gave Hofstra a 29-21 lead at the half.

However, Hofstra closed out the quarter with a 9-4 spurt to lead by nine, 41-32, following three quarters.

Francois and Thomas traded three-pointers to open the fourth quarter scoring and the teams would trade points throughout most of the quarter. Hofstra led by eight, 47-39, with 4:15 to play when the Privateers Dearica Pryor heated up. She scored none straight points to get the Privateers within one, 49-48, with a three-point play with 55 seconds to go.
