Matt Rogers and
Ericson Velasquez won championships,
Nikolas Miller placed second, and
Eric Shindel was fourth as Hofstra saw five wrestlers compete at the Nassau Open at Nassau Community College Sunday.
Rogers steamrolled his way to a title at 174 pounds, winning a pair of tech falls (17-2 & 16-0) in the first two rounds, a win by fall (38 seconds) in the semifinals, and an 11-6 decision over Dante Gutbrod in the finals.
Velasquez opened up his 184 pound title chase with a win by fall and then earned decisions in the quarterfinals and semifinals. He closed out his day with a win by fall over East Stroudsburg's Josh Leidig in 2:11 to claim the championship.
Miller had a round of 32 bye at 197 pounds and won by decision in his round of 16 match. He followed that with a win by fall in the quarterfinals and a decision victory in the semifinals. Miller would drop a hard-fought 10-7 decision in the finals to James Cruz of the Merchant Marine Academy to place second.
Shindel had a busy afternoon as he wrestled six matches to finish fourth at 157 pounds. After dropping his opening match to James Lunt by major decision, Shindel picked up four consecutive wins by decision, including a sudden victory 9-7 win in the consolation semifinals to advance to the third place match against Lunt. In their second bout of the day, Shindel fared better with a 6-3 loss by decision for a fourth place finish.
Hofstra's fifth competitor was
Mario Biancamano at 141 pounds. He started strong with a win by fall (0:44) over RPI's Ahmed Sabir in the round of 16. Biancamano dropped his quarterfinal match by decision and then lost by decision in the consolation round of 8 #2 to end his day.
Hofstra will be back in action on December 22 at home against American. Match time is 6 p.m.
