Newark, DE –
Lieke Gorsse scored two goals and tallied an assist for Hofstra as the Pride dropped its final Colonial Athletic Association game of the 2022 season, a 6-4 defeat to Delaware from Fred P. Rullo Jr. Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Hofstra falls to 1-5 in the CAA and 6-10 overall. Delaware improves to 7-10 overall and 5-1 in the conference.
Delaware jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter with goals from Morgan Rigual and Emma Miller. After the Fightin' Blue Hens added a third goal early in the second quarter by Lizzie Rothwell, Gorsse and
Cami Valor brought the Pride back to within one of the hosts. Valor maneuvered through the defense into the shooting arc, and she laid off a pass in front of the Delaware goal for Gorsse to put into the back of the net. Forty seconds later, Gorsse raced the length of the pitch with the ball on her stick and passed it off to Valor, who went to her backhand and beat goalie Lizzie Gaebel for the goal with 5:05 left before the halftime whistle.
Delaware upped its lead back to two with a pair of goals in the third quarter by Julia Duffhuis and Lisa Kater to put the score at 5-2 going into the fourth quarter. Gorsse tallied her second goal of the day after using excellent stick work and ball control to beat a Delaware triple team and fired a blast past Gaebel.
Samantha Spera made it a one-goal game with 5:32 left after she finished off a fast-break pass by Valor for her fourth goal of the year, but Delaware put the game out of reach with a score by Genevieve Johnson off a penalty corner with 3:14 to go.
