Hofstra Honors Three Seniors, Concludes 2022 Season Against Rider

Hempstead, NY – The Hofstra field hockey team wrapped up its 2022 season of competition Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 home defeat to Rider in non-conference play from Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium.

Rider opened the scoring five minutes into the start of the second quarter. Valeria Perales got just enough of her stick to redirect an incoming shot from Indy Zoontjens to put the score at 1-0 for the Broncs. The visitors doubled their lead with 2:35 left in the quarter from another penalty corner opportunity, this time it was Maeve Riehman who redirected a shot from Zoontjens and into the net.

Hofstra pulled to within one with 16 seconds left before halftime off a backhander from the top of the shooting arc by Lieke Gorsse, after Fede Schroder forced a turnover and fed Gorsse with a long pass that found the sophomore midfielder with plenty of space in front of her.

Merlijn van der Vegt made four stops for the Pride in the season finale, upping their season total to 85 saves and their career total to 308. Gorsse's goal was her fourth of the season, and Schroder tallied the first assist of her collegiate career.

Zoontjens picked up two assists for Rider, while Abby Hartwell was also credited with an assist on Rider's second goal. Kaitlyn Tomas made a pair of saves against Hofstra to pick up the win.

Hofstra ends its season with a 6-11 overall record and a 1-5 mark in the Colonial Athletic Association. Rider improves to 13-5 overall with today's win.
