Hofstra Gives No. 24 Virginia All It Can Handle In 1-1 Draw

Charlottesville, VA - Ryan Carmichael put Hofstra on top with a goal in the 67th minute, but No. 24 Virginia scored the equalizer on a penalty kick in the 76th minute as the teams battled to a 1-1 draw Tuesday night at Klöckner Stadium.

Hofstra saw its record move to 9-3-2 on the season with the draw, while Virginia is now 8-4-2.

The Pride employed a defensive game plan against the Cavaliers, packing the box with defenders. The strategy worked as Virginia managed just three shots on goal in the games. The Pride did not have many offensive opportunities of their own with two shots in total, both on goal.

Hofstra struck first after Oliver Svalander's strong individual effort as he tried to work the ball into the 18-yard box and drew a foul just outside the line. Carmichael took the 19-yard free kick and launched a missile over the wall and into the upper right half of the net to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.

Hofstra was whistled for a foul in the box which resulted in a penalty kick. Philip Horton took the kick and sent a shot into the left side of the goal to tie the game with just over 14 minutes to play. Both teams had chances down the stretch with the Pride drawing back-to-back corner kicks and the Cavaliers shooting wide and getting a corner kick, bit neither could get the decisive goal.

Wessel Speel finished with a pair of saves on the night for Hofstra, while Holden Brown had one save for the Cavaliers.

Hofstra returns to action Saturday afternoon at Drexel in a key Colonial Athletic Association game in Philadelphia. Kick-off is at 1 p.m.
