MSOC: Hofstra Grinds Out 2-1 Victory At Saint Joseph's

Philadelphia, PA - Mason Tatafu's goal 1:12 into the second half snapped a 1-1 tie and Hofstra would hold on to post a 2-1 victory over Saint Joseph's Tuesday night at Sweeney Field. The win was Hofstra's fifth in a row.

The Pride improved to 8-1 on the season with the victory while the Hawks slipped to 3-7.

Hofstra opened the scoring at the 5:21 mark as Ryan Carmichael notched his fourth goal in the last two games when he got a foot on a long cross towards the far post from Roc Carles. Shortly after the goal, a storm came into the area and caused a nearly two-hour weather delay.

Saint Joseph's would get tie the score at 31:35 as James Fletcher scored off a rebound after a Hofstra defender headed the ball off of keeper Wessel Speel. The ball caromed to Fletcher and he was able to slide a shot past Speel for the equalizer and the 1-1 score would stand into halftime.

Hofstra wouldn't wait long to score what proved to be the game-winner. Following a foul, Hofstra was awarded a free kick at midfield. The kick was sent into the box where it was headed by Matthew Vowinkel and found its way to Tatafu and the freshman defender hit a sliding shot that got past Hawks keeper Lars Haavie. It was Tatafu's second career goal.

Speel made four saves for the Pride while Haavie saved six shots for Saint Joseph's. Hofstra had a 12-8 advantage in shots and a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.

Hofstra returns to action Saturday night at Delaware. Kickoff in Newark is set for 8 p.m.
