Newark, DE -
Ryan Carmichael scored two goals as the Hofstra University men's soccer team recorded a 4-1 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Delaware Saturday night at Grant Stadium. The win was Hofstra's sixth consecutive victory and improved the Pride's record to 9-1 overall on the season, which is the best 10-game record in program history. Hofstra is 3-1 in league play.
Hofstra opened the scoring at the 31:07 mark as Carmichael headed in a pass from
Matthew Vowinkel for a 1-0 lead. The Pride would take the one-goal advantage into the locker room at halftime but wasted no time in adding to the lead once play resumed as Carmichael collected a cross from
Hendrik Hebbeker and sent in a shot from five yards out to make it 2-0 just 1:25 into the second half.
Storm Strongin would extend the Hofstra lead to 3-0 at 51:37 with a penalty kick, before the Blue Hens got on the board at 65:24 on Josh Hesson's goal. Hebbeker would pour water on any comeback hopes for the Blue Hens with an unassisted goal from 18-yards out at 76:04 that made it 4-1.
The Pride once again turned in a stifling defensive effort, limiting Delaware (1-7-1, 0-4 CAA) to just five shots overall with two on goal. Hofstra keeper
Wessel Speel made one save while his Delaware counterpart, Scott Sampson, had five saves.
Hofstra is back in action Tuesday night at home against Columbia with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
