Zyare Abdul-Rahim had 14 kills to lead Hofstra, but Northeastern rallied for a five-set win over the Pride on Saturday afternoon at Solomon Court. The Pride also got 13 kills, seven digs, and a career-high-tying four blocks from graduate student
Ana Martinovic.
Hofstra falls to 7-7 overall and 1-2 in Colonial Athletic Association play. Northeastern improved to 7-6 and a perfect 3-0 in league action. Set scores were 21-25 25-18, 14-25, 28-26, and 15-6.
The Pride got off on a solid start in the match, hitting nearly .300 in the first set as they earned a four-point victory. The entire match was back and forth and early on would be no different as Northeastern evened the score with a win in the second stanza.
Hofstra would put itself on the brink of victory as the dominated in the third set, holding Northeastern to a negative hitting percentage, en route to an 11-point win. The Pride would attempt to put the Huskies away in the fourth set, holding a late 23-20 lead before Northeastern rallied and eventually captured a 28-26 triumph to send the match to a fifth and final set. The Huskies jumped out to an early commanding lead in the final set and never looked back in rallying for the win.
Freshman
Florencia Wolkowyski was also in double figures for Hofstra with 10 kills, while freshman
Beatriz Alves had 42 assists and 13 digs for her fourth double-double of the season, and freshman
Chiara Cucco picked up 24 digs. Sophomore
Damla Tokman had a career-high 11 blocks for Hofstra in the match.
Liz Carroll had 37 assists and 10 digs for Northeastern, which also got 23 digs from Kayla Martin.
Hofstra and Northeastern will face each other again on Sunday with the first serve scheduled for 2 p.m.
