Hempstead, NY - Freshman
Florencia Wolkowyski tied her season-high with 15 kills, while graduate student
Ana Martinovic added 14 kills and 10 digs in Hofstra's four-set loss to Towson on Sunday afternoon at the David S. Mack Physical Education Center.
Towson manages a split of the opening weekend of conference action with the victory after Hofstra earned a five-set win over the Tigers on Saturday.Â
Hofstra fell to 7-6 and 1-1 in Colonial Athletic Association play with the loss, while Towson improved to 13-1 and 1-1 in the league. Set scores were 22-25, 25-21, 25-19, and 27-25.Â
The Pride jumped out early with the narrow win in the opening stanza. It would be Towson rallying today, though, as the Tigers flipped the script in the second and third set and sent the match to a fourth set win Hofstra needing a win to send the match to a fifth set.Â
Hofstra looked to be on the brink of doing just that as a block from Martinovic and junior
Sarah Pierre pushed the lead to three, 24-21, and gave the Pride set point. Towson would score four straight points before a Martinovic kill knotted the score at 25. At that point, Towson tallied the final two points of the contest to earn the hard-fought win between the two squads.Â
Freshman
Beatriz Alves posted 37 assists and seven digs for Hofstra, while freshman
Chiara Cucco added 26 digs.Â
Towson had four players in double figures in kills led by Fay Bakodimou's 15. Emily Jarome chipped in with 10 kills and 13 digs.Â
Hofstra is back in action next weekend when it travels to Northeastern for a pair of CAA matches. The Pride and the Huskies will meet on Saturday and Sunday with both matches starting at 1 p.m.Â
