Hempstead, NY - A pair of second quarter goals from
Mercedes Currie and
Mercy Jasterzenski and a stout defensive performance were the keys to a 2-0 victory for the Hofstra field hockey team against Quinnipiac from the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium in a Sunday afternoon non-conference clash.
With its third straight win, Hofstra improves to 5-4 on the year, and dumps Quinnipiac to 0-6 overall.
Currie found the back of the net for the fourth time this season to break the deadlock in the second quarter.
Eline Oldeman received a long pass out of the defense from
Cami Larsson, and the freshman forward drove at the Quinnipiac backline and maneuvered through the defense before entering the shooting arc. Her shot at the top was blocked by a Quinnipiac stick, but the ball bounced past Mack Vorel, who charged off her line in an attempt to make the save, and Currie was there for the wide-open goal at 7:45 in the quarter.
The Pride would quickly double its tally just a minute later off the stick of Jasterzenski. Larsson hit Jasterzenski with a pass from the midfield logo, and the senior midfielder entered the shooting arc after dodging past a Quinnipiac defender. With zero resistance from the Bobcat defense, Jasterzenski wound up and unleashed a missile of a shot that beat Vorel to make it 2-0 with 6:33 remaining in the frame.
While Quinnipiac upped the tempo and pressure at the start of the second half, the Hofstra defense held its ground and refused to allow a ball into the net.
Merlijn van der Vegt made six saves on the day against the Bobcats, with four coming in the third quarter, and the Hofstra defense held Quinnipiac scoreless despite allowing 10 penalty corner opportunities to their opponents.
Hofstra is home once again on Friday, September 24, in a 4 p.m. contest with Rider.
