FH: Late Goals Sink Hofstra in Overtime Loss Against Rider

Hempstead, NY - After leading all game, the Hofstra field hockey team dropped a tough 3-2 overtime result to Rider on Friday from the Hofstra Field Hockey Stadium in non-conference action.

The Pride sees their record sit at 5-5 following today's game, and Rider improves to 6-2 on the year. Today's defeat snaps Hofstra's three-game winning streak.

Senior Cami Larsson put the Pride on the board first early in the first quarter. Senior Djuna Slort saw her shot on a penalty corner blocked, but the rebound fell to Larsson. The senior entered the shooting arc and backhanded her shot over Rider's Kaitlyn Tomas for the opener eight minutes into the game for her second goal of the season.

Hofstra added to its lead late in the third quarter off the stick of freshman Lara Borensztein. On the fourth Hofstra penalty corner of the contest and second in the quarter, Djuna Slort sent a shot in towards the crowded front of the Rider goal, and Borensztein slid to her knees and redirected the shot past Tomas with five seconds left on the clock, giving Borensztein her fourth tally of the season.

Carly Brosious put rider on the board five minutes into the fourth quarter when she maneuvered around Slort to put herself in a one-on-one position with junior Merlijn van der Vegt, and she finished past a diving van der Vegt. The Broncs tied the game up with four minutes to play in regulation after a restart following a foul just inside the 23-meter line. Julia Divorra passed to Tess van Ommeren, who entered the arc and shot low and past the outstretched right leg of van der Vegt for the tying goal.

In sudden victory overtime, a giveaway in the Hofstra end of the field allowed Rider a scoring opportunity, and Divorra fed Brosious, who beat van der Vegt to their right for the winner. It was the second goal of the day for Brosious, and her seventh of the season for the Broncs.

The 2021 season continues for Hofstra on Friday, October 1, as the Pride opens Colonial Athletic Association competition against William & Mary with a 6 p.m. start-time.
