Rob Weissheier had five hits, including three home runs, and five RBIs on the day and
Jimmy Joyce struck out 10 batters over seven innings in game one, yet it was not enough as Northeastern completed a doubleheader sweep over the Pride Saturday at Friedman Diamond. Game scores were 5-3 in game one and 14-8 in game two.
Hofstra drops to 15-18 overall and 6-12 in the CAA. Northeastern extends its winning streak to 16 games, the longest in the nation, and is now 26-6 overall and 14-0 in the CAA.
The teams conclude the weekend series Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m.
Game 1 Recap
After Weissheier and Scott Holzwasser traded first inning solo home runs, the Huskies took a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on a RBI double by Danny Crossen to score Jared Dupere. Weissheier put Hofstra on top in the sixth inning with a two-run home run. However, Northeastern responded in the bottom half of the inning with two runs as Teddy Beaudet delivered a two-out, two-run single with the bases loaded to give the Huskies a 4-3 lead. Beaudet added a third RBI in the eighth with a safety squeeze bunt that allowed Crossen to score for a 5-3 lead. NU tacked on an insurance run in the eighth inning as Beaudet successfully dropped down a safety squeeze to score Crossen and give the Huskies a two-run lead. Hofstra would put runners on the corners in the ninth with one out after a pinch-hit double from
Nick Marrero and a single from
Ryan Morash, but Brandon Dufault escaped the jam with a foul pop out and a strikeout for his fifth save of the season.
Kyle Murphy (5-0) allowed four hits and struck out eight over seven innings to earn the win. Eric Yost pitched a hitless eighth before yielding to Dufault.
Joyce allowed four runs on six hits over seven innings and slipped to 3-3 on the season. Weissheier was 2-4 with the two home runs, two runs and three RBIs. Marrero and
Austin Gauthier had doubles for the Pride.
Game 2 Recap
Hofstra fell behind, 9-0, after two innings as Northeastern put up eight runs in the second inning. Jeff Costello had a grand slam in the inning for the Huskies. Hofstra would get on the board in the fourth as
Santino Rosso hit a two-run shot to right.
Anthony D'Onofrio delivered a two-run single in the sixth to make it a 10-4 game.
The Huskies would add two runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 12-4 lead. Hofstra got a sacrifice fly and an RBI single from
Brian Goulard in the eighth and Weissheier hit his third home run of the day, a two-run shot, in the ninth to close out the Hofstra scoring.
Sebastian Keane (4-1) picked up the win for Northeastern, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings.
Mark Faello (2-1) took the loss for Hofstra after allowing nine runs on seven hits in one-plus innings.
Weissheier, D'Onofrio, and Marrero each had three hits in the game. Rosso had two hits and three runs scored.
Notes:
- The multi-home run game was the first of Weissheier's career.
- Joyce has struck out 10 or more batters in three consecutive starts.
- Marrero had four hits on the day.
