Brookline, MA - Northeastern hit four home runs including two by Jared Dupere and Cam Schlittler limited the Pride to one run on five hits over six innings as the Huskies took game one of a four-game series, 13-1, Friday afternoon at Friedman Diamond.
Northeastern extended the nation's longest winning streak to 14 games and moved to 24-6 overall and 12-0 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the win. Hofstra slipped to 15-16 overall and 6-10 in league play.
The Huskies scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back. Jeff Costello and Scott Holzwasser started the game with consecutive singles with Holzwasser taking second on the throw. Hofstra starter
Jack Jett struck out Dupere, but the pitch was wild and Dupere was safe at first on a throwing error and both runs came in to score. Following a stolen base, Danny Crossen doubled in Dupere with the third run. Northeastern would hit a pair of home runs in the third as Dupere and Max Viera went back-to-back to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Pride loaded the bases in the fourth with no outs but managed just one run as
Will Kennedy scored on a double play grounder. The Pride would put just one more runner in scoring position the rest of the way.
Dupere finished 4-5 with two home runs, three RBIs, five runs scored, and two stolen bases. Crossen was 3-4 with two RBIs while Viera was 2-4 with two RBIs. Corey DiLoreto hit the fourth home run for the Huskies, a pinch-hit two-run shot in the eighth.
Schlittler (5-0) struck out six before the trio of Brian Rodriguez, Henry Ennen and Rick Burroni threw an inning of relief each to close out the game.
Santino Rosso was 2-4 with a double for the Pride while
Ryan Morash went 2-3 with a double. Jett (2-3) allowed 10 runs (7 earned) on 11 hits over six innings of work. He did have eight strikeouts.
Mike Mirando pitched the final two innings for the Pride, allowing three runs on five hits with one strikeout.
The teams continue the series Saturday with a doubleheader at 11 a.m.
