Hempstead, NY - Hofstra senior
Tareq Coburn added arguably the most impressive honor of his career today as he was named a 2020-21 Academic All-America®, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America.
Coburn earned a spot on the third team and was one of only 17 players nationally selected for one of the three prestigious Academic All-America® teams.
Coburn is the first-ever Hofstra men's basketball student-athlete to receive Academic All-America® honors and he is just the 29th in the history of Pride athletics.
Coburn, who earned his degree in community health and carried a 3.74 grade point average, shined both on and off the court for Hofstra during his career.
During the 2020-21 year he earned a trio of notable awards as he was named the Colonial Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year in men's basketball, the recipient of the CAA Dean Ehlers Leadership Award, and garnered All-CAA Third Team accolades as well. He was twice the winner of the CAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award, having won it in 2019-20 as well, and he also garnered CoSIDA Academic All-District 1 First Team accolades twice in his career.
A multiple time recipient of the Hofstra Athletic Director Scholars Academic Honor Roll and the CAA Commissioner's Academic Honor Roll, Coburn has also been a Dean's List student and a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court.
On the court, he scored 971 points during his three-year Hofstra career and tallied 170 three-pointers to rank 10th all-time in program history in that category. He was a member of the 2019 and 2020 CAA Regular Season Champions and the 2020 CAA Tournament Champions. Including his one season at St. Bonaventure, Coburn totaled 975 points, 409 rebounds, 75 assists, 69 steals, and 42 blocked shots. He played in 102 games and made 79 starts.
