Hempstead, NY - Northeastern jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning and went on to post a 10-3 Colonial Athletic Association victory over Hofstra Wednesday afternoon at University Field. The game, which was Hofstra's final home contest of the season, was a rare mid-week conference affair as the teams needed to make up a rained out game from earlier this season.
Northeastern moved to 28-6 overall and 16-0 in the CAA with its 18th win in a row. The Huskies own the longest winning streak in the nation. Hofstra falls to 15-20 overall and 6-14 in the CAA.
The Huskies drew three consecutive walks to start the game and scored their first run on a fielding error. Max Viera followed with an RBI double to make it 2-0. Northeastern then hit back-to-back sacrifice flies to extend the lead to 4-0 before the Pride came to bat.
Northeastern added a run in the third on consecutive doubles from Jared Dupere and Viera, and one in the fourth on Scott Holzwasser's RBI single up the middle. The lead would extend to 7-0 in the seventh as Ian Fair singled home Ban Malgeri, who had singled and stole second.
The Pride got on the board in the seventh as
Santino Rosso hit a leadoff single and went to second on a walk to
Nick Marrero.
Anthony D'Onofrio would drive home Rosso with a hard single to left field. Hofstra would make it a four-run game, 7-3, in the bottom of the eighth as
Kevin Bruggeman's two-out double scored
Austin Gauthier and
Rob Weissheier.
However, the Huskies ended any thoughts of a Hofstra comeback with a three-run ninth.
Jack Jett (2-4) started for Hofstra and did not get out of the first inning as he allowed the four runs on three walks and one hit.
Brian Rodriguez (2-0) got the win for the Huskies after going three innings, allowing one hit with two strikeouts. Viera finished the day 3-5 with a pair of RBIs and runs scored. Malgeri was 2-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored as well.
Hofstra is back in action Friday afternoon at Towson in the start of a four-game series. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
