BB: Hofstra Drops CAA Opener To Northeastern

Hempstead, NY - Will Kennedy had two hits including his first career home run and drove in both Hofstra runs in an 8-2 Colonial Athletic Association loss to Northeastern Friday at University Field. Cam Schlittler scattered five hits over seven innings for Northeastern and struck out 11 batters to pick up the win.

Hofstra slipped to 9-7 overall and 0-1 in the CAA with the loss. Northeastern improved to 12-6 overall and 1-0 in the CAA with the victory.

Hofstra opened the scoring in the second inning as Kennedy put a double off the wall in left center that allowed Ryan Morash to score from first base to give the Pride a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies responded with a four-run top of the third inning to take the lead. Spenser Smith singled with one out to start the rally. Ben Malgeri followed with an RBI double and, after a walk, came around to score on a single from Jared Dupere. Jeff Costello knocked in the third Northeastern run with a single and Ryan Cervone delivered the fourth with an RBI infield single.

Kennedy cut the Hofstra deficit in half in the fifth with a blast to right field that made it a 4-2 game. That would be all the runs the Pride would manage as Schlittler and reliever Brian Rodriguez limited Hofstra to five base runners the rest of the way.

Northeastern put up another four runs in the sixth inning with Malgeri driving in two with his second double of the game. Dupere had a sacrifice fly and Costello added an RBI single.

Schlittler moved to 2-0 on the season and his 11 strikeouts are a career high. Rodriguez went the final two innings without allowing a hit.

Steven Kaenzig (0-1) made his first career start for the Pride and allowed four runs on five hits over three innings. Kaenzig was an emergency starter after Jack Jett was a late scratch.

The teams continue the series Saturday with an 11 a.m. doubleheader.

Notes:
-Morash extended his hitting streak to eight games and his on-base streak to 23 dating back to last season.
-Michael O'Hanlon, the last of three Hofstra pitchers, made his season debut and pitched three scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
-Hofstra is 23-42 all-time versus Northeastern.
