Hempstead, NY -
Jimmy Joyce struck out a career-high 13 batters in 7 innings in game one but suffered a hard luck loss, 3-2, in the opening game of the doubleheader against Northeastern. The Huskies took the second game, 13-5.
Hofstra slipped to 9-9 overall and 0-3 in the Colonial Athletic Association with the losses. The Huskies moved to 14-6 overall and 3-0 in the CAA with the wins.
Joyce (1-2) allowed three hits, no walks and three runs (two earned) over his 7 innings with
Steven Boscia allowing just one hit with two strikeouts over the final 2 frames. Northeastern starter Kyle Murphy came to pitch as well, allowing two runs on five hits with 12 strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings of work. The relief tandem of Eric Yost (1 2/3 innings) and Brandon Dufault (1 inning) closed out the win for the Huskies with the latter earning his second save.
Northeastern scored a run in the first on a passed ball on what would have been a strikeout for the third out. The Pride would tie the game in the fourth as
Ryan Morash doubled, went to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly from
Rob Weissheier. Northeastern would go up by two in the sixth as Spenser Smith doubled to lead off the inning and went to third on a wild pitch. Joyce bore down and struck out the next two batters before being called for a balk on a 1-2 pitch to the No. 3 hitter in the order, Jared Dupere. The balk brought in the go-ahead run and on the next pitch, Dupere homered to make it a 3-1 score. Weissheier would get the Pride within one in the bottom of the inning as he hit his second homer of the season to left. The Pride had a scoring chance in the seventh with runners on the corners and two outs but after a pitch got past Northeastern Teddy Beaudet,
Will Kennedy attempted to score from third. He stumbled on the way home, which allowed Beaudet time to throw him out at the plate.
In the nightcap, the Huskies had 15 hits and slugged four home runs in the 13=5 victory. Northeastern scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings to extend a 4-2 lead and then seven more times over the final three innings. Every Husky batter but one had a hit and all nine drove in at least one run. Scott Holzwasser had three hits in the game while five other players had two-hit games. Dupere had two hits including his seventh home run of the year. Kyle Peterson drove in three runs.
Kennedy had three hits and an RBI for the Pride.
Brad Camarda (1-1) started on the mound and allowed five runs on six hits in 4 innings of work.
Sebastian Keane (2-1) got the win for Northeastern, allowing two runs on six hits with eight strikeouts in 6 innings. Â Â
